About The MAMA Podcast
MAMA (Motherhood. Alcohol. Mental Health. Anxiety.) is a special podcast series from Sober Awkward, created to sit alongside the Healthy Mum Healthy Bub program.
Developed in close collaboration with researchers from The University of Sydney and supported by funding from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), MAMA combines lived experience with evidence-based research to provide practical, compassionate support for mothers navigating the realities of early parenthood.
As a mum, author, and co-host of Sober Awkward, I have spent years speaking with women who feel isolated by anxiety, overwhelmed by the pressures of motherhood, and confused about their relationship with alcohol. Again and again, I heard the same themes: exhaustion, guilt, loneliness, and the belief that they were somehow failing.
That’s why this series matters.
Working closely with researchers, clinicians and maternal health experts, I helped create MAMA to bridge the gap between academic research and real life. We wanted to take important evidence-based information and make it accessible, relatable, and genuinely useful for busy mums who may not have the time, energy or headspace to read research papers or attend workshops.
Each episode explores topics such as anxiety, stress, alcohol use, emotional wellbeing, self-compassion, and the realities of modern motherhood. Through honest conversations, personal stories, humour, and practical tools, MAMA aims to help women feel seen, supported, and less alone.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with anxiety, questioning the role alcohol plays in your life, or simply trying to navigate the beautiful chaos of motherhood, you’re in the right place.
Because motherhood was never meant to be done perfectly, and it certainly wasn’t meant to be done alone. ❤️

Mumming - A Year of Trying (and Failing) to be a Better Parent - Out Now!
A hilarious and painfully relatable memoir about a mum who sets out to revolutionise herself and her parenting – one failed experiment at a time.
Victoria Vanstone thought she’d be the kind of mum who would spend her days ironing names onto school shirts and who knew the best chocolate-chip cookie recipe off by heart. But as the years have ticked by, she’s got the feeling that woman isn’t going to show up. Instead, she’s the kind of mum who shouts and throws plastic cups at walls.
So Victoria has made a choice: she’s going to try to become the mum she’s always wanted to be. She embarks on a year of parental development – enrolling in a parenting course, implementing an exercise regime, awkwardly trying to make friends as an adult, and a holiday away from her family – to reset the parenting dials.
What follows is a year of trying, failing and trying again, but one that ultimately brings joy back into family life. As Victoria stumbles from one misadventure to the next, she begins to realise that getting things wrong isn’t the end of the world – it’s actually where the fun begins.
Heart-warming and side-splitting, Mumming will have you nodding your head in recognition and celebrating the imperfections of parenting.
